Fatty catfish can be unhealthy

Fish can be an integral part of diets in most parts of the world as a good source of reliable food nutrients. Its nutrients, particularly fatty acids and protein, have not only served as direct nutrients but also as components of healing process in many health conditions. Fish oils have been shown to offer outstanding health benefits to consumers due to the presence of the Omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids.
In Nigeria, catfish, popularly known as point-and-kill, has adapted to nearly all parts of the country with a steady rise in its culture in recent years. This has resulted in the growth of aquaculture  in the country.
However, in as much as these popularly known catfish can be good for our consumption, results have shown that it can also be dangerous to our health. The reason  is the abundance of Omega 6 fatty acids. In an interview with a cardiologist, Dr Jane Anisulowo, she States that farm or home grown catfish is the worst enemy as it contains more fatty hormones than ones harvested from natural water.
According to her, fish is better than meat no doubt; it digest easily and it contains protein. "But cat fishes that they sell nowadays are cultivated with hormonal feeds that are filled with steroids and other fattening chemicals just to make them profitable." She said that these chemicals are cancerous in nature and it also has oil on its skin which makes it too unhealthy.
The good news, she explained, is that if one can get the one from the river, it is edible but the one that is being reared by famers are better smoked. "It is only edible when it is smoked because some of its fats would have been lost.
